Yesterday, I reviewed an app called Codification, which uses for its icon the section symbol — §. That is certainly a symbol that lawyers need to type a lot, but it isn’t immediately apparent how to do so on an iPhone or iPad. . .

You can type many additional characters using the iPhone and iPad keyboard by holding down on a letter. I see that I haven’t posted a full list of those shortcuts since 2010, back when iPhone J.D. had far fewer readers, so I thought it might be useful to post the list again, which is largely still the same in iOS 8 . . . .

The GoodReader app is one of the most frequently used apps on my iPad because it has such great tools for organizing my documents, syncing them to my computers, and annotating PDF files.  And perhaps best of all, the developer is constantly finding ways to make the app even better.  This week, GoodReader version 4.10 was released, and it adds the ability to create and add signatures to your documents.  I’ve used many other apps with a signature feature, but GoodReader does such a nice job of implementing the feature that it may now be the best way to sign a document on an iPad or iPhone. . . .

If there are rules for or against using any type of technology in a courtroom, you will normally find the court’s preference in its local rules. Courts don’t write local rules just for fun. They mean it when they say they don’t like something. If your court clearly states in its local rules that certain types of technology are not tolerated, don’t temp fate by assuming that you will be the exception.

There are countless ways that an iPhone and iPad can be useful to an attorney while in court — whether you are at counsel table or just monitoring proceedings from the cheap seats in back. I often use my iPhone to look up a statute, check my calendar, get some information from an email, or remind myself of the name of another attorney in the courtroom. I often use my iPad to look at a case cited by an opponent, review the key part of an exhibit or transcript, or take notes. But you cannot do any of this unless the court lets you use electronic devices in the courtroom. I remember a time many years ago when the Eastern District of Louisiana did not allow any cell phones, even if turned off, and if my Palm Treo was still in my pocket, I had to walk back to my office, a few blocks away, and leave it there. Many courts are now more lenient, but attorneys should not just assume that it is okay to plan to use an iPhone and iPad in court. Instead, it is wise to first determine if there is an applicable court rule on the issue.

I write about this today because Ray Ward, an appellate attorney at my law firm, has a case that is soon set for oral argument before the U.S. Fifth Circuit, and in connection with that case, yesterday he received a notice from the Fifth Circuit of a new policy on electronic devices in the courtroom. Ray wrote about the notice (and attached a copy) in this post on his Louisiana Civil Appeals blog. In short, you can now have an iPhone or iPad in the courtroom, but it must be turned off unless you are presenting argument or at counsel table. And even then, you cannot take pictures or video, nor can you use social media. . . .

As usual, Mr.Richardson has shared a variety of tips and apps for iPhones and iPads well worth noting. I must find time to listen to more podcasts. There is so much great info there, and I’m missing it! -CCE

CI’ve long been a fan of using a stylus to take handwritten notes on the iPad. There are a lot of nice styluses on the market, and I’ve tried a ton of them, but in my opinion there is still no one perfect stylus because the iPad just isn’t designed to detect something smaller than a fingertip. Of course, Apple could change this, an there are now rumors that Apple might be creating a stylus for the iPad. Serenity Caldwell of iMore explains why this would make sense, and I would also love to see a stylus designed by Apple to work well with an iPad. And now, the other news of note from this week:
• If you listen to podcasts, I strongly encourage you to check out Overcast, a fantastic app that I use every day. California attorney David Sparks explains why he likes the app.
• New York attorney and iPhone J.D. reader David Rosen asked me to share that he started a new blog on New York civil procedure called Arguments & Demonstrations. In his latest post, we learn that, according to a recent New York opinion, chimps are not people with legal rights. Those damn dirty apes!
• CarPlay is a technology that is just starting to be included in new cars. In theory, it should be the best way to connect your iPhone to your car. In practice, the technology is still pretty new and rough around the edges. Jason Snell of Six Colors explains how it works, and also what doesn’t yet work.
• One of the more sophisticated features of iOS 8 is that apps can include action extensions, so that you can use features of one app from within another app. Allyson Kazmucha of iMore rounds of 11 good examples of action extensions on the iPhone.
• Rene Ritchie of iMore has some great tips for using Safari on an iPhone.
• And finally, what is a device that you use every day and every night? No, not your iPhone, I’m talking about your toothbrush. But don’t you wish that you could get those two critical devices to talk to each other? If that has been keeping you up at night, then you’ll want to learn about the Oral-B Electric Toothbrush with Bluetooth Connectivity, a toothbrush that pairs with your iPhone to make sure that you brush your teeth long enough and in the right way. You can get it on Amazon for only $125. You know this has to be good. First, it’s recommended by Jeff Richardson; second, the book is written by PDF expert Ernie Svenson. It doesn’t get much better than that. -CCE

I still remember the time, many years ago, when PDF documents seemed novel. Today, of course, most attorneys work with PDF documents just about every day, especially if you practice in federal court. And PDF is my preferred file format for storing documents on my iPad. My GoodReader app has a huge number of folders, each of which is full of PDF documents for the pleadings, correspondence, research, exhibits, and other key documents associated with my case files. But as much as I work with PDF files, I always feel like there is so much more to know about working with this file format.  I suspect that most of you feel the same way. (If you don’t, then either you are a PDF genius, or you just don’t know what you are missing.)

Today, I have two good recommendations for helping you to learn more about working with PDF files:  a free podcast, and an inexpensive book. . . .

The what? Yeah, I had to look that one up too; a pilcrow is a symbol that most lawyers call the paragraph symbol — ¶.

Congratulations and thanks to Jeff Richardson for six years of iPhone J.D. Blog. As usual, Jeff shares a sweet collection of apps in honor of his yearly anniversary. Thank you, Jeff! -CCE

iPhone J.D. turns six years old this week.  Seems like it was just yesterday that I wrote the first post on iPhone J.D., explaining why I found the iPhone a valuable tool in a law practice.  Back then, almost no attorneys used iPhones (about 5% according to a 2008 Am Law Tech Survey), but now the majority of attorneys in the U.S. use an iPhone (around 60% according to the ABA).

Over the past six years, I’ve written over 1,200 posts on iPhone J.D., including reviews of over 300 apps, reviews of every major iOS device released by Apple (from the iPhone 3GS to the new iPhone 6 and all models of the iPad) and reviews of over 300 accessories.  I’ve also tried to provide lots of tips and tricks for getting the most out of your iPhone and iPad, and discussed all of the tech news that I think that you might want to know about if you use an iPhone or iPad.

Through the years, I’ve gotten tons of great feedback from iPhone J.D. readers, ranging from emails to over 2,500 comments on the site, and I’ve been honored to share guests posts by attorneys from around the world who use iPhones and iPads in their law practice.  Site traffic has grown steadily every year, and in just a few days, one of you is going to load iPhone J.D. and it will be the 5 millionth page view since the site launched.

2014 ABA Tech Survey Shows More Attorneys Using iPhones, But iPad Use Holds Steady, by Jeff Richardson, iPhone J.D. Blog

Every year, the ABA Legal Technology Resource Center conducts a survey to gauge the use of legal technology by attorneys in the United States.  My thoughts on the prior reports are located here:  2013, 2012, 2011, 2010.  No survey is perfect, but the ABA tries hard to ensure that its survey has statistical significance, and every year this is one of the best sources of information on how attorneys use technology.  Yesterday, the ABA released Volume VI of the report titled Mobile Lawyers.  This year’s report once again shows that a large number of attorneys are using iPhones and iPads.

Six out of ten attorneys now use an iPhone

In both 2014 and 2013, the survey revealed that 91% of attorneys use a smartphone.  (In 2012 the number was 89% and in 2011 the number was 88%.)  For the past four years, there has been a slight correlation between law firm size and smartphone use.  In 2014, for example, 86% of solo attorneys reported using a smartphone, 89% in firms of 2 to 9 attorneys, 95% in firms of 10 to 49 attorneys, and for firms with 100 or more attorneys, 96% use a smartphone.  As a whole, though, it is fair to say that the survey consistently shows around nine out of every ten attorneys use a smartphone. . . .

In this version of Jeff Richardson’s “In the news,” we get a wide variety of iPhone and iPad candy. There is  information about Apple’s new partnership with IBM, smart watches, making the most of Wi-Fi on an iPhone or iPad, apps to track billable hours and listen to podcasts, the iStick – a new thumb drive with a USB and Lightning connector to transfer files between a computer and an iPad without having to use a cloud (a bit pricey for my budget), and Touch ID – a fingerprint scanner for iPhone 5s.

For those of you already in football mode, Jeff shows us how to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket from any iOS device for $200.

If you are a hiker, you may be interested in a new device that lets you connect to another iPhone or Android device up to 50 miles away even when there is no cell or Wi-Fi Service. You may think of other ways this kind of thing would be handy.  It is nice when traveling abroad because it will allow you to remain in touch with another GoTenna user without having to pay the high international cell roaming fees.

Review: GoodReader 4 — Next Generation Of Goodreader Adds PDF Page Management, by Jeff Richardson, iPhone J.D.

GoodReader has long been one of the most useful apps on my iPad because it makes it easy to organize documents into folders and read them on the iPad.  I have folders for each of my cases, sub-folders within each case folder for Correspondence, Pleadings, Exhibits, etc., and I sync all of my non-privileged documents to and from my iPad using Dropbox.  It’s a good system that has worked well for me, and I know countless other attorneys who do the same thing.

Yesterday, the next generation of GoodReader was introduced.  It is a new app called GoodReader 4, and you need to pay for it.  It is currently on sale for $2.99, but after an introductory period the price will go up to $6.99.  Unlike the prior version of GoodReader, GoodReader 4 is a universal app so you can buy it once and use it on both your iPhone and your iPad.  You can tell the old app from the new app because the old app icon was green whereas the new one has an aqua gradient  The old version of GoodReader was also updated yesterday to version 3.21, and you need to get that update in order to migrate your documents from the old version of GoodReader to GoodReader 4. . . .

I’m at ABA TECHSHOW in Chicago right now, and the big news on Thursday was that Microsoft released a version of Word (and Excel, and PowerPoint) for the iPad.  I have been kicking the tires on this app since it was released Thursday afternoon, and I am incredibly impressed.  Unlike Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone released last year, the new Word app for the iPad has virtually every feature that lawyers want to use.  Every attorney who uses an iPad will want to get this app. . . .

Apple Fixes Security Flaw In iOS, Perhaps Thanks To Snowden?, by Jeff Richardson, iPhone J.D. Blog

Apple releases minor security updates for the iPhone and iPad from time to time.  When folks ask me if they should upgrade, I virtually always say yes.  Why not have an iPhone that is more secure, and less likely to be hacked by bad guys?  So this past Friday afternoon when Apple released iOS 7.0.6 and said that it was a security update, I updated my devices but otherwise did not think much of it.  (And no, you did not miss an update if, like me, you went from iOS 7.0.4 to 7.0.6; 7.0.5 was only released for iPhones sold in China.)

But over the weekend, there were two posts about this update by John Gruber of Daring Fireball (Post 1, Post 2) that I thought were pretty interesting.  According to PRISM documents leaked by Edward Snowden, the NSA gained the ability to intercept encrypted iPhone traffic in October of 2012, and that’s apparently right after the bug fixed by iOS 7.0.6 was introduced.  As Gruber notes, this could mean all sorts of things.  It could mean that someone at Apple intentionally added a backdoor for the NSA.  Or it could mean that someone at Apple made a simple coding mistake but the NSA found out about it and exploited it.

Or it could just be a big coincidence, but there is at least a chance that Apple has now found and fixed a security bug that had been exploited by the NSA. . . .

WordPerfect Viewer returns to LawBox, by Jeff Richardson, iPhone J.D. Blog

If you have an iPad or iPhone, you know that your device cannot natively view WordPerfect files. (Yes, there are still plenty of folks in the legal community who use WordPerfect.)

There is an app for that — WPD Viewer — originally reviewed by Jeff Richardson in 2010. Created by LawBox, this app will let you view a WordPerfect document, but you cannot edit it. Regardless, you can cut and paste into a new document if you wish to edit it.

The folks at Corel liked the app so much that they bought the right to sell it. As of January 2014, the app has come back to LawBox. The founder of LawBox, Nicholas Zeltzer, has already updated the app for iOS7. One of the post’s commenters, Charles Jannace, added that the app connects directly with Dropbox.

Although this app does not give you a smooth transition from WordPerfect to Word or back again, it does give you a way to access and copy and paste a WordPerfect document. -CCE

Review: DkT — access PACER on the iPad and iPhone, by Jeff Richardson, iPhone J.D. Blog

Jeff reviews a free app created by Matthew Zorn called “DkT.” In this post, Jeff leads you through the various steps to use this app. Because this is the first version, no doubt Matthew will tweak it as time goes by. Regardless of its minor flaws, if you practice in federal court, this is an incredibly useful tool for your iPad or iPhone. -CCE

If you ever practice in federal court, then using PACER is a part of your job.  PACER websites typically let you select a mobile option so that you can access PACER on an iPad or an iPhone, but the experience isn’t ideal.  You cannot save your username or password, it is difficult to manually enter case numbers, and every time you access a docket sheet or a document you have to pay to do so.  Matthew Zorn, an attorney at a large New York law firm, decided to do something about that, so he spent nine months writing a useful and beautifully designed app that he calls DkT.  The DkT app is free and can access PACER for federal appellate, district and bankruptcy courts.
