While some state bar associations’ ethical opinions are requiring its members to keep up to date with legal technology, law schools do not seem to have gotten on board. If lawyers already practicing are considered behind if they do not aggressively incorporate legal technology in their practice, shouldn’t law schools be leading rather than following? Though many legal practice areas have been in decline since the Great Recession, the demand for eDiscovery services has skyrocketed. This post from Bloomberg’s Big Law Business blog says that the law school curriculum needs to likewise evolve by providing more training opportunities that teach the next generation of lawyers these vital practice skills . . . .

We’ve all have run into them, regardless of whether the person is a 1L or paralegal student. Thankfully, this stage is often temporary. In some cases, unfortunately, the condition is permanent. -CCE

Pack it in everybody! Mere days into the new year, there’s a 1L out there who has the ‘law’ all figured out. He can isolate the relevant aspects of a case at first glance and his agile mind can dismiss a flawed reading with ease. He’s so prepared that he’s already talking smack about law school graduates. And he did it all on Facebook so we can see how smart he is. We are truly living in blessed times. He will restore balance to the law!

Now, some naysayers would suggest that a 1L a few days into their law school career has no place calling out the work of those who’ve come before as irrelevant and untrue. That perhaps singling out by name a law school graduate and questioning his legal acumen was excessive for a mere pup. Ignore those voices. You can’t silence genius like this. . . .

Bad Thinking Leads To Bad Writing, by Legal Writng Prof, Legal Writing Prof Blog

In a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article titled ‘Bad Writing and Bad Thinking,’ author Rachel Toor argues that some problems with students’ writing arise from their belief that they must write like others in their fields—even when that writing is clumsy. Instead, Toor says, students should follow George Orwell’s and Strunk and White’s advice about thinking and writing clearly. She adds, ‘Call me simple-minded, call me anti-intellectual, but I believe that most poor scholarly writing is a result of bad habits, of learning tricks of the academic trade as a way to try to fit in. And it’s a result of lazy thinking.’  Law students’ exposure turgid judicial opinions may explain some of the problems they face in learning legal writing.

My name is Heather Venrick, and i am a 3l at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. I am in the top third of my class. I am on law review. I have held leadership positions in a number of organizations, including the SMU Law Board of Advocates, the Women in Law and Association for Public Interest Law student organizations, and the State Bar of Texas Law Student Division. I have participated in five national moot court teams. I have interned with a federal judge. I have clerked with four different small- to mid-sized firms. I have experience in civil and criminal, public and private, and in-house and outside counsel. I am still looking for permanent employment. And I am not the only one. So many students with similar and, perhaps, even better credentials are in the same situation, wondering the same thing: what else can I do?

Over the last two years, LexisNexis has been ramping up its library of ebooks, with a growing list of titles for both practitioners and law students. Law students, in particular, are key consumers of ebooks, Lexis says, citing statistics that say six in 10 college students prefer digital books over print. One of the advantages of an ebook over print is the ability to link interactive features that augment and enhance the core text.

That is what Lexis is aiming to do with Evidence Challenge, its new interactive role-playing game designed to help second- and third-year law students test their knowledge of evidence law. . . .
