Some of the Best, Free Legal Research Guides on the Internet – no, Wikipedia does not count.

Even when you or your firm have access to Westlaw or Lexis, you may still want or need access to free resources to do your legal research.

Most, if not all, states provide a free website for state law (e.g., statutes, case law, state constitution, attorney general opinions, etc.). Perhaps the easiest route is to go to that state’s official government website. The state court’s websites use their own search engines – do not expect each to work the same as the others.

Here is another resource that will also lead you to state law: 50 States (http://www.50states.com/). (Click on the state, and scroll down to “Courts” and click on “Judicial System.”

Below is a selection of websites that provide comprehensive links to state, federal and, in some instances, international law.

U.S. Administrative Law Research: General Sources

Gallagher Law Library, University of Washington School of Law
http://bit.ly/1aB7xrf

Not familiar with the Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, or administrative law in general? Not to worry. This website provides links for general sources, directories, guides, websites, and statistics. Lots of goodies here, including a tutorial for looking up the Code of Federal Regulations, a Guide to the Rulemaking Process, an Administrative Law Research Tutorial, and a Research Guide to the Federal Register.

This is the kind of website I call the “motherload” – something that provides a lot of quality information at one place. Take a look at the buttons towards the top of the page — The Library Catalog, Databases, Research Guides, Free Law Online, and the Gallagher Blog. More useful information there as well.

Search Systems.Net

Unlike so many websites that started as free and now do not disclose that there is a hidden fee if you want the information they say they can provide, this site is the real deal. Yes, if you want to sign up for premium sites, you have that option. But you can still get free results of useful information.

It uses many public sites used regularly legal professionals. But if you are not someone who is already aware of where to find this information, this web site is for you. These folks have been on the Internet a long time. They are consistent and dependable.
